ECOWAS Gives Mali's Military Junta One Week To Handover To Civilian Transition Or...




In response to AFP, Authority of Heads of State and Authorities of the Financial Neighborhood of West African States (ECOWAS) has given the army junta in Mali one-week altimatum to nominate a civilian transition head by 15 September.


The event comes following the 57th Unusual Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Authorities of ECOWAS, held on Monday in Niamey, Niger.


Mali’s army ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar on 18 August following weeks of protests within the nation.


The 75-year-old and his Prime Minister Boubou Cisse had been arrested alongside different authorities officers after the transfer by the army.


Keita was held in detention for 10 days, with the army justifying the transfer saying it was mandatory for his personal safety.


He was flown overseas for medical remedy upon his launch.


ECOWAS late final month requested the army to nominate a civilian head to guide the transitional authorities, however didn’t announce any deadline for doing so.


Monday’s announcement now leaves the army junta with solely eight days to switch energy to a civilian, who ECOWAS stated wouldn’t take part within the nation’s subsequent presidential election.
