An elephant poacher who killed greater than 500 of the animals has been sentenced to 30 years of arduous labour within the Congo Republic.

Mobanza Mobembo Gerard, generally known as Guyvanho, was sentenced for ivory trafficking and tried homicide of park rangers.

In line with the Wildlife Conservation Society, the infamous poacher led hunts into the Nouabale-Ndoki Nationwide Park which killed greater than 500 elephants since round 2008.

The tried homicide fees towards Guyvanho had been linked to a 2019 incident when his poacher group allegedly fired at and wounded members of a ranger patrol in Nouabale-Ndoki Nationwide Park, WCS stated.

Guyvanho’s sentencing marked the primary legal conviction of a wildlife trafficker within the Congo Republic.

“The sentence ‘sends a particularly robust message that wildlife crime is not going to be tolerated and might be prosecuted on the highest ranges,”
WCS regional director Emma Stokes stated in a press release this week.
