Imo Teachers Vow To Resist Any Attempt To Reopen Schools

Plans by the Imo State authorities to reopen faculties has suffered a setback after lecturers within the state vowed to not reopen faculties amidst the coronavirus pandemic.


In keeping with Punch, the chairman, Nigeria Union of Academics within the state, Philip Nwanshi, who spoke with journalists in Owerri, on Wednesday stated that the state had carried out nothing in settling their arrears of salaries


The NUT chairman stated regardless of assembly with the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, the state authorities had refused to offset the arrears of salaries.


He stated Uzodimma had in a gathering with NUT some months in the past promised to clear arrears of salaries owed to lecturers.


Nwanshi complained that up until the primary week of September salaries of about 2000 lecturers within the state had not been paid for about seven months.


He stated “In Ngor Okpala LGA, no main college trainer has obtained wage since March this yr. In Owerri West and different LGAs additionally, many lecturers are but to obtain their salaries.

“There isn’t a method you may inform me that what’s holding their salaries is BVN and the banks. We can’t imagine that. You can’t inform me that the papers of all of the lecturers in Ngor Okpala are flawed.

“The union has not been operating since March and the federal government is deducting the check-off dues and never remitting the identical to the union. And if we don’t react, our members won’t ever have full confidence in us anymore. They’ll suppose we’ve compromised.”
