Lagos: Fuel scarcity looms as tanker drivers begin strike

The Nationwide Union of Petroleum and Pure Fuel Staff (NUPENG) says the deliberate strike by Petroleum Tanker Drivers in Lagos would begin on Monday.

The motion might trigger gas shortage in Nigerian’s largest metropolis.

The union stated its assembly with Lagos State Authorities led to impasse.

NUPENG chairman in South-West, Tayo Aboyeji, spoke with the Information Company of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

He stated the problems which pressured the drivers to provoke an indefinite strike was not addressed throughout the four-hour assembly.

Aboyeji disclosed that the Lagos authorities solely promised to get again.

He stated their stand remained that extortion and harassment of members cease.

“Safety brokers and hoodlums are extorting our members and officers of the Lagos State Visitors Administration use taser on our drivers and this will kill. Since they don’t seem to be prepared to deal with these points, we are going to begin the strike on Monday morning till they’re able to resolve them.

“It’s unlucky that the strike may have an effect on all different states within the federation as a result of most of them load their petroleum merchandise in Lagos depots. We aren’t comfortable to disrupt gas provide as a result of we all know the impact however we can’t proceed to deal with the issues.”

The official disclosed that members of PTD had been accusing NUPENG of taking aspect with safety brokers to molest and assault drivers on Lagos roads.

NUPENG Nationwide President, Williams Akporeha, had in a press release on Friday directed tanker drivers to start the withdrawal of their providers as from 12midnight on Monday.
