Manchester United news: Paul Scholes names the team-mate that was a ‘lunatic’ in training

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has revealed he tried to avoid Nemanja Vidic in training because the Serbian was a ‘lunatic’.

The defender signed for United on Christmas Day in 2005 and initially struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford.

However, Vidic soon formed a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand during his first full season at the club and he spent a trophy-laden nine years at the Theatre of Dreams before joining Inter Milan.

The Serbian was famed for his physicality and once famously declared that you can ‘fix a broken nose but if you let somebody score the goal your pride cannot be fixed’.

During a United podcast alongside Marcus Rashford, Scholes was asked about playing alongside Vidic and revealed that the Serbian fancied himself as a playmaker.

‘He didn’t play as a centre half in five-a-side,’ said Scholes.

‘He was one of those defenders that thought he could play a bit as a no10. You know what I mean?

‘But when it came to a game he would head and kick everything. In training he could be a bit moody and a nuisance in the box especially but a great centre half.

‘He was perfect for English football he could head the ball, tackle. he was great, a really good player.’
Scholes was then mocked for his famously poor tackling and after defending his challenges, he said it was Vidic that was the ‘lunatic’.

‘I was fairly good at tackling. It was all calculated,’ said Scholes.

‘I was just getting people back. That’s all I was doing! I never instigated. If someone got me, there’s a chance I’d get them back

‘Vida [Vidic] had some tackles in the box, he could be a lunatic.’
